The “Virtual Laboratories” e-service operates based on Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) technology.
The essence of this technology is the replacement of a traditional workstation with its virtual image hosted on a server.
VDI provides a wide range of data processing services in a manner that is much more flexible, reliable, efficient, and cost-effective than traditional computer workstations. A user can access a virtual computer not only from the institution’s premises but also from anywhere in the world via the Internet.
A connection to the virtual desktop can be established using any access device — such as a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone — running any operating system, provided it has a VDI client installed or simply a web browser.
Both the access device and the Internet connection may have average (or even modest) performance parameters. The speed of data processing in this case does not depend on the performance of the access device, but on the power of the virtual computer itself. The access device and Internet connection are only responsible for handling the image transmitted from the server hosting the virtual machine.
Benefits of using VDI technology include:
- Unlimited access (in terms of time and location) to the software provided by the Faculty of Management, University of Warsaw,
- The ability to use the same permissions and access rights to online services and portals granted to computers located within the Faculty/University network (based on IP addresses), even when working remotely,
- The possibility of achieving high application performance that would be unattainable on home computers.
When connecting to a “Virtual Laboratory” computer, you may feel as if you were sitting at a workstation in a traditional computer lab at the Faculty of Management.
